Streaming giant Netflix has revealed the first teaser trailer for its upcoming action thriller series Man on Fire, a fresh adaptation of the popular revenge saga that previously inspired the iconic 2004 film. The new series places Yahya Abdul Mateen II in the lead role as John Creasy, the troubled mercenary whose quest for redemption and revenge lies at the heart of the story.
The character of Creasy will be familiar to many fans thanks to the acclaimed film Man on Fire, which starred Denzel Washington and young actor Dakota Fanning. That film became a cult favorite for its emotional storytelling and explosive action. The new series, however, aims to expand the world of the character while diving deeper into his psychological struggles.
In this version, John Creasy is portrayed as a former elite mercenary who is haunted by severe PTSD after years of violence and loss. Determined to rebuild his life and confront his inner demons, Creasy attempts to walk away from the chaos that defined his past. But peace proves short lived when tragedy strikes again, forcing him back into the fight.
The series follows Creasy as he embarks on a brutal mission for revenge after the loss of his only companion while protecting the daughter of a deceased colleague. As he investigates the forces responsible for tearing the family apart, the story unfolds into a high stakes pursuit filled with betrayals, dangerous enemies, and relentless action. Much of the narrative is set in Brazil, adding a fresh setting to the familiar revenge driven premise.
Alongside Yahya Abdul Mateen II, the show features a strong supporting cast including Billie Boullet, Bobby Cannavale, Alice Braga, Scoot McNairy, and Paul Ben Victor. Their characters are expected to bring new dimensions to the gritty world surrounding Creasy’s journey.
The series is created and showrun by screenwriter Kyle Killen, whose previous work includes projects such as Halo and the psychological drama The Beaver. Episodes are directed by filmmakers including Vicente Amorim, Clare Kilner, and Michael Cuesta.
The story itself originates from the “Creasy” novel series written by A J Quinnell, first published in 1980. The books have already inspired multiple screen adaptations, including the earlier 1987 film version starring Scott Glenn. With this new series, Netflix appears to be aiming for a longer, more character driven exploration of Creasy’s violent world.
Early reactions to the teaser suggest that the show leans heavily into intense action and emotional conflict, with the tagline hinting at the tone: when they crossed him, they lit the wrong match. While the revenge driven premise may feel familiar to fans of action thrillers, the presence of Yahya Abdul Mateen II in the lead role has already sparked excitement, thanks to his commanding screen presence.
Man on Fire will premiere worldwide on Netflix on April 30, 2026, promising a mix of gritty action, emotional depth, and explosive confrontations as John Creasy returns to the screen once again.
