What happens when a lonely fisherwoman decides that the perfect husband does not need to be born at all? That wonderfully bizarre question lies at the heart of Wicker, an upcoming comedy that promises to turn the familiar rules of love, marriage and village life upside down. Black Bear Pictures has unveiled an additional official trailer for the film, offering audiences another glimpse into its unusual blend of humour, romance and social satire. Starring Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård and Peter Dinklage, Wicker is set to arrive in cinemas on October 23, 2026, bringing a decidedly unconventional love story to the big screen.
The story follows an ostracised fisherwoman, played by Olivia Colman, who finds herself looking for companionship in a place where she struggles to fit in. Instead of following the usual path to romance, she approaches the peculiar local basket-maker, portrayed by Peter Dinklage, and commissions him to weave her a husband. What begins as an extraordinary solution to loneliness soon becomes something much more complicated when her handmade companion turns out to be far more remarkable than she ever expected. Her unusual creation attracts attention, fascination and jealousy, threatening to disrupt the quiet rhythms of the village.
Alexander Skarsgård plays the wicker husband, a character whose extraordinary presence becomes the catalyst for the film's growing chaos. Although he is made from woven material, his character possesses a soulful spirit and unexpected qualities that make him much more than a strange novelty. His arrival challenges the villagers' expectations and changes the way those around him view relationships, attraction and social acceptance. The character's distinctive appearance is another major talking point, with Weta responsible for creating his wicker costume, helping bring the film's unusual central idea to life.
The ensemble cast adds further appeal to this offbeat comedy. Alongside Colman, Skarsgård and Dinklage, the film features Elizabeth Debicki, Ella Bruccoleri, Richard E Grant, Nabhaan Rizwan and Kiell Smith Bynoe. With such a varied group of performers, Wicker has plenty of room to explore the different reactions that emerge when an extraordinary outsider enters a tightly knit community. Some characters become fascinated by the unusual husband, while others struggle with the disruption he represents. The resulting clash between curiosity, desire and social expectations provides fertile ground for both comedy and emotional conflict.
Behind the camera, Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson co-direct and co-write the film, bringing their creative vision to a story that mixes absurdity with a surprisingly human emotional core. Rather than presenting a conventional romantic comedy, Wicker approaches love and marriage through the lens of a comedic fable. Its premise allows the filmmakers to question why society places such importance on appearances, conventional relationships and the approval of others. The fisherwoman's journey also opens up questions about loneliness, belonging and the freedom to seek happiness outside established social rules.
With its unusual premise, acclaimed cast and sharp take on social conventions, Wicker is shaping up to be one of the more distinctive comedy releases of October 2026. The film's mixture of absurd humour and heartfelt storytelling could appeal to viewers looking for something beyond a predictable romantic narrative. Olivia Colman's portrayal of a woman searching for companionship, Alexander Skarsgård's extraordinary wicker creation and Peter Dinklage's peculiar basket-maker promise an entertaining combination. As the theatrical release approaches on October 23, audiences can look forward to a story that asks a wonderfully strange question: what if the perfect partner is not quite what anyone expected?
