A brand new trailer has been released for Kokurojo The Samurai and the Prisoner, the upcoming historical thriller from acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Backed by legendary Japanese studio Shochiku, the film promises a gripping blend of psychological mystery and historical drama set against the turbulent backdrop of Japan’s Warring States period.

The story unfolds inside a besieged castle where suspicion and paranoia slowly begin to consume everyone trapped within its walls. Veteran actor Masahiro Motoki plays Arakura Murashige, a warlord who rebels against the brutal tactics of the powerful daimyo Oda Nobunaga. As Murashige defies Nobunaga and attempts to protect his stronghold, the castle becomes completely surrounded by enemy forces, cutting off all outside support.

While Murashige tries to maintain order among his restless retainers and protect the people inside the fortress, a shocking crime changes everything. A young boy is mysteriously murdered within the castle walls, turning the already tense stronghold into a claustrophobic locked room mystery. With the enemy army outside and potential traitors lurking within, the situation spirals into fear and mistrust.
To solve the mystery, Murashige forms an unlikely alliance with a brilliant but dangerous strategist imprisoned in the castle dungeon. Played by Masaki Suda, Kuroda Kanbei is a genius tactician whose mind may be the only key to uncovering the truth. As the investigation unfolds, suspicion spreads across the castle’s residents, including Murashige’s trusted allies and even members of his own household.
The film also features a strong ensemble cast including Yuriko Yoshitaka as Murashige’s wife Chiyobo, along with Takashi Aoki, Ryota Miyadate, Tasuku Emoto, and Joe Odagiri. Their characters are all trapped inside the castle, each becoming a possible suspect as the tension escalates.

What makes Kokurojo particularly notable is that it marks the first true period piece directed by Kurosawa, a filmmaker widely respected for his atmospheric storytelling and psychological depth. Over the years he has built an impressive filmography that includes titles like Cure, Pulse, Tokyo Sonata, and Wife of a Spy. His ability to blend suspense with philosophical themes has made him one of Japan’s most distinctive modern filmmakers.

The screenplay is based on the novel Kurojo written by Honobu Yonezawa, bringing a literary mystery into a sweeping historical setting. The trailer hints at a tense mix of political intrigue, psychological drama, and investigative storytelling, all unfolding within the suffocating isolation of a castle under siege.

Kokurojo The Samurai and the Prisoner will first open in Japan on June 19, 2026, with international release plans expected to follow later in the year. With its unique blend of samurai history and locked room mystery, the film is already shaping up to be one of the most intriguing Japanese releases on the upcoming cinematic calendar.
