Actor Avinash Tiwary, who is stepping into the family entertainer genre with Ginny Weds Sunny 2, spoke candidly about the decline of wholesome family films in Bollywood during the trailer launch in Mumbai, alongside co-star Medha Shankr.
“Actually, first and foremost, a lot of excellent films are being made; we go out and watch the good ones, and perhaps we should continue to do so. However, if I were to think about it in great detail—especially considering a city like ours—you’ll notice that a vast number of people here are migrants. Right? People travel here from various places. They arrive, and in this environment, they tend to exist more as individuals,” Avinash remarked, highlighting how social changes have affected cinema-going patterns.
He elaborated on the broader implications for family films, “Consequently, they go out to the movies with their friends or partners, rather than as a traditional ‘family unit’—the way joint families used to go out together in the past. I feel that migration is one of the primary reasons for this shift. Secondly, I believe ticket prices play a role. And thirdly, I feel we have simply stopped thinking with the mindset that films need to be created to cater to this entire spectrum of audiences—to appeal to everyone. I say this based on my own personal experience… somewhere along the line, that specific sensibility seems to be fading away from our collective mindset. The very concept of 'family'—as we all know—has undergone a subtle shift; it has become far more individualistic. This film is an attempt to bring families back together, because I genuinely—personally—always used to go to the cinema with my family.”
Avinash also shared a personal anecdote, emphasizing how family viewing has shifted: “Just recently, I was speaking with my sister-in-law at home, and I asked her, 'Which of my films did you show the kids?' She replied, 'Oh, in that one, you went completely mad! In that other one, a witch appeared! And in that one, a child got shot!' It was a sobering moment when I realized that even the children within my own household weren't watching my films—despite the fact that I had been striving to do so much, trying to 'show off' my versatility, and experimenting with all sorts of different roles.”
With Ginny Weds Sunny 2, Avinash hopes to revive the family cinema experience. Directed by Prasshant Jha and produced by Vinod Bachchan, the sequel promises fresh marital chaos, high-energy family drama, and romance set in the scenic town of Mussoorie. The film stars Avinash Tiwary and Medha Shankr, alongside Lillete Dubey, Sudhir Pandey, Govind Namdev, Gopi Bhalla, Nayani Dixit, Vishwanath Chatterjee, and Rohit Chaudhary, and is slated for release on 24th April 2026.
