Get ready for a world where family loyalty comes with a dangerous price tag, old crimes refuse to stay buried and every wrong decision can turn deadly! Prime Video has unveiled the first-look teaser trailer for Criminal, an exciting new crime drama based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Packed with crime, family secrets, gunfights, heists and complicated relationships, the series promises a gripping ride through a universe where everyone has a past and nobody can escape it easily.
At the heart of Criminal are generations of criminal families whose lives are connected by violence, betrayal and murders that continue to shape their futures. Rather than following just one isolated crime story, the series builds an interconnected world in which the actions of one generation have consequences for the next. The story begins with two friends, Leo Patterson, played by Charlie Hunnam, and Ricky Lawless, portrayed by Gus Halper. While Leo is desperately trying to escape the criminal world in which he was raised, Ricky has an entirely different ambition. He wants to follow in the footsteps of his father, a legendary outlaw. Clearly, these two friends are heading in very different directions!
Things become even more complicated when Ricky's older brother Tracy, played by Luke Evans, returns home from the Army. His arrival brings the family's tragic history back into the picture, threatening to pull everyone into a dangerous cycle. Meanwhile, Adria Arjona plays Greta, a sharp-tongued car thief from Leo's past, who adds another layer of trouble to an already complicated situation. Emilia Clarke appears as Mallory, Ricky's girlfriend, who is increasingly worried about just how far he might go to survive. With relationships tangled in crime and loyalty constantly put to the test, the characters are heading towards a collision that could change everything.
The series boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Alongside Hunnam, Arjona, Evans, Clarke and Halper, the main cast includes Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison and John Hawkes. The recurring and guest cast is equally packed with familiar faces, including Michael Mando, Garrett Hedlund, Patrick J. Adams, Pat Healy, Taylor Selé, Aliyah Camacho, Marvin Jones III, Michael Xavier, Dominic Burgess, Chris Diamantopoulos, Lawrence Kao, Katie Stevens, John Pyper-Ferguson, Robert Lee Hart, Aina Brei'yon and Kyle Davis. With so many performers coming together, Criminal has plenty of talent to bring its sprawling crime universe to life.
Behind the scenes, the project has a strong creative connection to its source material. Comic book writer Ed Brubaker serves as creator, co-showrunner and writer, with Jordan Harper also serving as co-showrunner. The writing team includes Sarah Carbiener, Minhal Baig, John Covarrubias and Cortney Norris. The series is based on Brubaker and Sean Phillips' graphic novels of the same name, while episodes are directed by Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck and Dee Rees. Having the original creator involved in shaping the adaptation is an exciting prospect for fans who have followed the graphic novels.
Prime Video is rolling out Criminal in two parts, giving viewers two instalments of its interconnected crime saga. Part One, titled Coward, premieres on January 13, 2027, followed by Part Two, titled Lawless, on January 27, 2027. With its combination of complicated family histories, dangerous friendships, criminal ambitions and tragic romance, the series looks set to deliver a dark and suspenseful viewing experience. The big question is whether Leo, Ricky and the people around them can break free from the past — or whether their family histories will ultimately decide their fate. One thing is certain: in the world of Criminal, getting out of trouble may be much harder than getting into it!
