What happens when the art world becomes so obsessed with shock value that even a dead body can pass off as a masterpiece? Well, apparently, all it takes is a struggling gallery owner, a questionable business decision and a room full of people desperate to call everything art! Roadside Attractions has unveiled the official trailer for The Gallerist, a dark comedy starring Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega. Set against the extravagant backdrop of Art Basel Miami, the film takes aim at the pretentious side of the contemporary art scene with a premise that is as bizarre as it sounds.

The story follows Polina, played by Natalie Portman, an ambitious but financially struggling Miami art gallery owner who is desperately trying to maintain her position in the elite art world. Facing mounting financial pressure and personal troubles following a difficult separation, she is determined to make her debut exhibition a success. But when an art critic accidentally dies at her gallery, Polina and her assistant Kiki, played by Jenna Ortega, come up with a truly outrageous plan. Instead of reporting the incident and dealing with the consequences, the two decide to present the corpse as a high-profile art installation!

And that's when the real madness begins. What initially seems like a desperate attempt to save the exhibition quickly turns into a full-blown nightmare. As guests begin arriving, the accidental corpse becomes the centrepiece of the gallery, attracting attention and creating an increasingly ridiculous situation. The women must keep their unusual secret under wraps while trying to convince the art crowd that what they are looking at is actually a groundbreaking work of art. But with influencers, visitors and the police entering the picture, maintaining the illusion becomes harder by the minute. And just when things seem strange enough, the idea of actually selling the supposed artwork takes the absurdity to another level!

The film brings together a rather exciting ensemble cast. Alongside Portman and Ortega, The Gallerist features Sterling K. Brown, Zach Galifianakis, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Daniel Brühl and pop star Charli XCX. With such a diverse collection of performers, the film has plenty of potential for outrageous characters and unpredictable comic moments. Portman steps into the role of a woman whose ambition appears to have taken a rather dangerous turn, while Ortega plays the assistant caught up in the increasingly chaotic scheme. Their unlikely partnership is at the heart of this twisted art-world adventure.

The Gallerist is directed by Cathy Yan, the Chinese-American filmmaker previously known for Dead Pigs and Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. Yan has also worked on the television series Succession. She co-wrote the screenplay with James Pedersen. The film is produced by Rae Baron, Zola Elgart Glassman, Jonathan King, Sophie Mas, Tom McCarthy, Natalie Portman and Ash Sarohia. It first premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where its reception was reportedly far from enthusiastic. While its outrageous premise and satire of the art industry have attracted attention, early critical reactions have been sharply divided, with some reviewers expressing disappointment in the film's execution.

At its core, the film takes aim at an art scene where hype, money, reputation and exclusivity can sometimes matter more than the actual work being displayed. By turning an accidental death into a supposed artistic statement, The Gallerist creates an extreme situation to poke fun at the culture of inflated valuations and the desire to be seen as someone who understands the latest artistic sensation. It is a wild concept, although whether the comedy successfully delivers on that promise is another question.

Roadside Attractions will release The Gallerist in select US theatres on December 4, 2026. With Natalie Portman, Jenna Ortega and a star-studded supporting cast, the film certainly has an attention-grabbing setup. But will audiences appreciate its bizarre humour, or will this art-world experiment leave them scratching their heads? One thing is certain: after this film, gallery visitors might think twice before asking whether an unusual installation is actually art!
