Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for The Hunchback, Soul of Paris, a new French live-action adaptation inspired by Victor Hugo’s timeless literary classic The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Also known by its French title, Quasimodo, l'âme de Paris, the upcoming historical drama brings a fresh interpretation of one of literature’s most recognisable characters, with French actor Vincent Cassel stepping into the iconic role of Quasimodo. Set against the turbulent backdrop of 19th-century Paris, the film combines romance, political unrest and a fight for survival in a city threatened by disease and revolution.
The story takes place in Paris in 1830, a period marked by social upheaval and the growing threat of cholera. At the centre of the narrative is a hunchbacked stonemason, played by Cassel, who finds himself hunted by the police and targeted for medical experiments. His life takes an unexpected turn when he falls in love with a dancer. As danger closes in, Quasimodo risks everything to protect the woman he loves, becoming caught between his feelings, the political turmoil surrounding him and the brutal circumstances of his time. His extraordinary journey ultimately inspires the legendary character that readers would come to know through Victor Hugo's novel.
The newly released trailer offers a glimpse of a darker and more grounded take on the familiar story. Rather than simply revisiting the traditional image of Quasimodo, the film places the character within a city struggling with disease, fear and political conflict. Its historical setting gives the romance a dangerous edge, as the protagonist must fight against forces that threaten both his freedom and the woman who has captured his heart. The combination of a period setting, intense drama and an impossible love story gives this adaptation its own identity while remaining connected to the literary world created by Hugo.
Alongside Vincent Cassel, the film features Benjamin Voisin, Jean-François Richet, Daphné Patakia, Karim Leklou, Noémie Lvovsky and Eugénie Richet as Cosette. The project is directed by Jean-François Richet, who also takes on a role in the cast. The screenplay has been written by Éric Besnard and Edgar Marie, adapting Hugo's celebrated novel, originally published in 1831 under the French title Notre-Dame de Paris. The book has inspired numerous film and television adaptations over the years, making Quasimodo's story one of the most enduring works in French literary and cinematic history.
For many international audiences, the best-known version of the tale remains Disney's animated classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame, released in 1996. However, the story has been reimagined in many different forms, with each adaptation bringing a new perspective to its themes of love, prejudice, courage and belonging. This latest French production arrives at a time when classic French literary works are once again attracting attention through new screen adaptations, following renewed interest in stories such as Les Misérables and The Three Musketeers.
The Hunchback, Soul of Paris is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on November 27, 2026. With Vincent Cassel taking on the challenging role of Quasimodo and the story unfolding amid the chaos of 1830s Paris, the film offers viewers another opportunity to experience Victor Hugo's unforgettable creation through a fresh cinematic interpretation. The new trailer has already introduced a compelling mix of historical tension and romance, setting the stage for a dramatic retelling of a classic tale.
