Well Go USA has dropped the official trailer for Dongji Rescue, a harrowing World War II thriller based on the true story of the Lisbon Maru sinking incident. Set in 1942 during the early years of the Pacific War, the film brings to light a lesser-known chapter of WWII history, highlighting the courage of Chinese fishermen who risked everything to save foreign lives in a time of chaos.
The star-studded cast includes Zhu Yilong, Wu Lei, Ni Ni, Yang Haoyu, Chen Minghao, William Franklyn Miller, Ni Dahong, Li Jiuxiao, and Wang Yiquan. The story centers around the Japanese cargo ship Lisbon Maru, which was secretly transporting over 1,800 British prisoners of war when it was torpedoed by an American submarine near the Zhoushan Islands. As the ship went down, hundreds of prisoners were left to perish at sea — but local Dongji fishermen responded with extraordinary bravery.
Directed by Hu Guan and Fei Zhenxiang, and written by Shu Chen, Runnian Dong, and Ji Zhang, Dongji Rescue pays tribute to a real-life act of humanitarian heroism. The Dongji villagers not only saved around 300 British soldiers but also shielded three survivors during a dangerous Japanese manhunt. The film aims to showcase the shared humanity found even in the darkest times of global conflict.
