Neon has just unveiled the first look teaser for the much-anticipated Brazilian political thriller The Secret Agent, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho (Bacurau, Aquarius). The film stars Wagner Moura in what early buzz is calling a career-defining performance, set against the chaotic and colorful backdrop of Carnival week in 1977 Recife, Brazil.
Moura plays Marcelo, a widowed technology researcher who arrives in the explosive heart of a country under dictatorship. What starts as a personal journey quickly turns into a dangerous game of survival. Marcelo finds himself entangled in a dark political conspiracy, pursued by mercenary killers, haunted by ghosts from his past, and caught in the unpredictable, almost surreal spirit of a Brazil on the brink. With nothing but his intellect and courage, Marcelo's primary goal becomes clear: escape the country with his young son before it’s too late.
Helping him navigate this deadly landscape is Elza, a mysterious and compelling figure within Brazil's growing underground resistance. As Marcelo gets pulled deeper into the fight, the line between personal survival and collective rebellion begins to blur. Filho’s direction masterfully weaves political paranoia with rich cinematic nostalgia—blending thriller, drama, and dark satire in a way that feels both retro and razor-sharp in today’s context.
The film not only showcases Wagner Moura’s range—from quiet desperation to explosive defiance—but also highlights Filho’s signature style, paying homage to the movies of his youth while diving deep into Brazil’s historical and emotional turmoil. It’s a film that promises urgency, style, and substance—thrilling and timely in equal measure.
The Secret Agent is set for theatrical release on November 26, 2025, and is already one of the most talked-about international titles of the year. With political tension, immersive world-building, and a deeply human core, this is one film you’ll want on your radar.
