In a major personal development, actor and Vijay is facing a divorce petition filed by his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, seeking to end their 27-year-long marriage. The couple, who tied the knot in August 1999, have two children: Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha.
According to the petition, Sangeetha, 48, alleges that Vijay, 51, was involved in an extramarital relationship with a female actor. She claims that she discovered the affair in 2021 and that despite assurances from Vijay that it would end, the relationship continued without remorse. The petition states that Vijay excluded Sangeetha from his social and professional life while frequently traveling and attending public events with the actress, with social media posts seemingly endorsing the relationship.
Sangeetha further claimed that Vijay’s actions caused repeated humiliation to her and their children. She also noted that he withdrew previously available facilities, imposed financial restrictions, and limited her freedom of movement. According to her, these actions, combined with what she describes as Vijay’s “continued adulterous conduct and repeated social media controversies” in 2024, caused severe mental torture. She maintains that their marriage has effectively ceased to exist and now survives only on paper.
The divorce petition cites grounds under Sections 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which allow for dissolution of marriage on the basis of adultery or cruelty. Sangeetha stated that the relationship is incapable of revival and offers her nothing but “mental agony, indignity, humiliation and suffering.”
The couple’s marriage, celebrated with both Hindu and Christian rituals, was once a high-profile affair, and Sangeetha, the daughter of a Tamil industrialist, was reportedly a devoted fan of Vijay before their wedding.
The case is currently pending before the District Court, and the outcome remains to be determined. The developments have sparked significant media attention given Vijay’s status in both the film industry and as the chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
