Peacock has officially unveiled the trailer for The Paper, a brand-new mockumentary sitcom that serves as both a spin-off and spiritual sequel to the beloved comedy series The Office. Created by The Office’s original mastermind Greg Daniels, alongside Michael Koman, this new series promises to bring back the deadpan humor, awkward silences, and everyday absurdity that made its predecessor a cultural phenomenon. With a release date set for September 4, 2025, fans of The Office finally have something fresh—and familiar—to look forward to.

Set in Toledo, Ohio, The Paper follows a scrappy, down-on-its-luck local newspaper called The Truth Teller. Once a respected institution in Midwestern journalism, it now operates on a shoestring budget, held together by a mismatched crew of volunteer reporters and eccentric editors. And yes, a documentary crew is once again lurking in the background, capturing every cringeworthy meeting and chaotic editorial decision in the same signature mockumentary style. Think less Dunder Mifflin, more dying newsroom—but the dysfunction remains top-tier.

The ensemble cast is packed with fresh and familiar comedic talent: Domhnall Gleeson plays the weary, possibly-too-honest editor-in-chief, while Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Alex Edelman round out the paper’s bizarre yet oddly loveable team. In a fun nod to the original show, The Office alum Oscar Nuñez returns in a mysterious new role—because let’s face it, what’s a sequel without a familiar face?

With a powerhouse writers’ room that includes Mo Welch, Alex Edelman, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Eric Rahill, and directors like Jennifer Celotta, Paul Lieberstein, and Ken Kwapis—all Office veterans—The Paper is clearly built to echo the magic of Scranton while carving out its own uniquely unhinged identity. The trailer already hints at sharp commentary on the dying print media industry, millennial burnout, and the eternal human capacity for pettiness in the workplace.

The Paper might be late to the mockumentary revival party (Abbott Elementary is already dancing), but if the trailer is anything to go by, it could very well be the workplace comedy Gen Z didn’t know they needed and Millennials will obsessively rewatch. Grab your red pens, power up your fax machines (if you still have one), and prepare to laugh at the slow collapse of local journalism—one awkward Zoom call at a time.
