Prime Video has officially dropped the trailer for Butterfly, an intense, character-driven spy thriller based on the graphic novel by Arash Amel. Set for release on August 13, 2025, the series brings together a powerhouse of production partners including The Amel Company, Amazon Studios, Boom! Studios, and 3AD. With a global cast and international setting, Butterfly promises to deliver high-stakes action layered with emotional depth and complex moral dilemmas.
At the heart of the story is David Jung, portrayed by Lost and Hawaii Five-0 star Daniel Dae Kim, a former U.S. intelligence operative living in South Korea. David’s quiet life is shattered when a ghost from his past resurfaces in the form of Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), a deadly young assassin tasked with eliminating him. As he’s hunted by Rebecca and the shadowy organization known as Caddis, David is forced to confront the fallout of an impossible decision he made years ago—one that changed his life and fractured his sense of identity.
The ensemble cast also includes Piper Perabo, Kim Ji-hoon, Park Hae-soo, Kim Tae-hee, Charles Parnell, Sean Dulake, Nayoon Kim, Sung Dong-il, and Lee Il-hwa, bringing a rich international presence to the series. Created and written by Ken Woodruff and Steph Cha, along with Dave Kalstein, Sung Rno, Diana Son, and Denise Thé, the show weaves espionage thrills with emotionally charged family drama. The trailer hints at both explosive action and psychological tension, offering a taste of the layered narrative to come.
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, Butterfly positions itself as a fresh take on the espionage genre—one that delves into loyalty, betrayal, and the personal cost of spycraft. With a release date just a day before India’s Independence Day and amid a rising demand for cross-cultural thrillers, Butterfly is poised to be a breakout global hit on Prime Video’s growing roster of prestige series.
