Amazon MGM Studios has released the first official trailer for Is God Is, the big-screen adaptation of the acclaimed stage play of the same name — and it promises a haunting, genre-bending revenge saga. Blending myth, Western grit, and dark comedy, the film follows twin sisters marked by trauma as they embark on a mission that could either liberate them or consume them.
At the heart of the story are Racine and Anaia, twin sisters scarred — physically and emotionally — by a devastating fire caused by their abusive father. Commanded by their bedridden mother, known only as “SHE” or “God,” the sisters set out for The Valley to track down the man responsible and confront his new life and family. What unfolds is an intense moral reckoning: will they choose vengeance, or will mercy rewrite their fate?
The film is written and directed by Aleshea Harris, marking her feature directorial debut. Harris adapts her own award-winning play, which first premiered on stage in 2018 and drew praise for its bold language, Afro-surrealist style, and fierce exploration of trauma and justice. Her transition from stage to screen retains the play’s raw emotional power while expanding its cinematic scope.
Leading the cast are Kara Young and Mallori Johnson as the determined sisters. They are joined by a powerhouse ensemble including Janelle Monáe, Erika Alexander, Mykelti Williamson, Josiah Cross, with special appearances by Vivica A. Fox and Sterling K. Brown. The ensemble brings gravitas and layered intensity to a story steeped in mythic revenge and fractured family bonds.
Is God Is is slated to hit theaters on May 15, 2026. With its striking premise, poetic fury, and Harris’ singular creative voice at the helm, the film is shaping up to be one of the most provocative and stylistically daring releases of the year.
