Actress and content creator Gargi Kundu has sparked important conversation around representation in the entertainment industry with her candid remarks on colorism. Reflecting on changing beauty standards, she said, “There was a time when dusky beauties ruled the industry, especially during 90s, but the landscape has changed. No dusky girl is being launched, everyone is launching fair girls.” Her statement has resonated widely, highlighting ongoing challenges around inclusivity and casting bias in Indian cinema.
Currently seen on the JioHotstar reality show The Society, Gargi shared her excitement about her debut in the reality TV space. “I am feeling great, this is my first reality show. I wanted to do a reality show for the longest time—I’ve been manifesting it, and now it has finally happened,” she shared. While the experience was fulfilling, it wasn’t without its emotional toll. She described the show as experimental, with limited guidance from the makers. “I kept it real, I like being real. It sort of got me some benefits, but I had to lose a lot for being real on the show.”
She revealed she was betrayed by friends on the show and suffered from ill luck. Despite setbacks, Gargi found solace in the support of the audience. “People liked me,” she said, reflecting on the positive response she received for her authenticity.
Gargi also opened up about her personal journey—from growing up in a lower-middle-class orthodox Bengali family to building a career in entertainment. “Dad worked hard to build a home, so they supported me in my education, not with entertainment career—this is something I did on my own. I never got support if I wanted to do something culturally; I did everything by myself.”
From being a trained Bharatnatyam and folk dancer to starting out as a viral content creator during the pandemic, Gargi has steadily carved a path in the Bengali entertainment industry. With a background in optometry, theatre, and dance, she now aims for pan-Indian recognition. “I made it big regionally, but I wanted people to know me across India and globally,” she stated, signaling her broader ambitions.
As she balances mainstream exposure with speaking up about industry biases, Gargi Kundu continues to be a voice for change—unapologetically real, culturally grounded, and determined to shape her own space.
