Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who had earlier criticised the trailer of The Kerala Story 2, calling it propaganda and raising concerns about a “beef paratha” scene, has once again become the center of debate.
Responding to Kashyap’s remarks, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah said, “I will not make any personal comments about filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. We have raised some questions with Anurag through our lawyers, but he hasn’t responded till now.”
Shah further referenced Kashyap’s 2010 film The Girl in Yellow Boots, stating, “My director had made a valid point about Anurag. Anurag Kashyap has made a film called The Girl in Yellow Boots where an inappropriate relationship between a father and daughter was portrayed. So, a person who can show a physical sexual relationship between a father and daughter—can any of his opinions be taken seriously on a topic like this? This is the question my director Kamakya had raised.”
While The Kerala Story 2 has now secured legal clearance for release in India, the film continues to face hurdles overseas. It is not releasing in several countries, including Malaysia and the UAE, amid ongoing controversies.
The debate around the film intensified after the Division Bench of the Kerala High Court cleared it for theatrical release, despite allegations that it stereotypes Kerala and its people. The verdict was a relief for the makers, who had been battling legal and political challenges leading up to the release. Shortly after the court’s decision, Shah addressed the media at a press conference and confirmed that the film would hit theatres the same evening.
With legal clearance now in place but controversies lingering, all eyes are on how audiences will respond to The Kerala Story 2 at the box office.
