Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled the trailer for Blue Moon, an upcoming historical drama directed by Richard Linklater. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including Ethan Hawke, Andrew Scott, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Giles Surridge, the film promises an intimate, real-time journey into the life of lyricist Lorenz Hart on a pivotal evening in American musical history.
Set entirely during the opening night party of Oklahoma!—Richard Rodgers' breakthrough collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II—Blue Moon captures the emotional unraveling of Hart, who was once Rodgers' creative partner. The story unfolds in real time over 100 minutes at Sardi’s bar on March 31st, 1943, offering a poignant look at a man coming to terms with personal loss, professional isolation, and the shifting tides of a war-torn world.
With a screenplay penned by Robert Kaplow, the film blends fact and fiction in Linklater’s signature narrative style. It's a meditation on art, love, and the inevitable passage of time, told through a vibrant cross-section of writers, musicians, actors, and protégés, many of whom would go on to shape the cultural landscape of post-war America.
Ethan Hawke, a long-time collaborator of Linklater, is expected to deliver another powerhouse performance, with Andrew Scott also drawing attention for his dramatic range. As anticipation builds, Blue Moon is already being tipped as a major contender for the upcoming awards season.
Blue Moon is slated for theatrical release on October 17, 2025.
