Alia Bhatt is inviting audiences to take a trip back to the wonderfully messy years of growing up with Don’t Be Shy. The actor-producer unveiled the official trailer of the upcoming young-adult romantic comedy on September 11, giving viewers a glimpse of a story filled with first loves, friendships, heartbreak and the kind of questionable decisions that somehow become unforgettable memories. Produced by Alia and Shaheen Bhatt, the film is set to premiere globally on Prime Video on September 25.
Sharing the trailer on social media, Alia summed up the film’s spirit with a simple but relatable caption: “first loves. best friends. heartbreaks. bad decisions. all the things that make growing up what it is.” And that pretty much sets the mood for Don’t Be Shy, which appears to embrace the awkward, emotional and occasionally chaotic journey of young adulthood rather than pretending growing up is always picture-perfect.
At the centre of the story is Shyamili “Shy” Das, played by newcomer Aarushi Bajaj. Shy describes herself as a “mean girl” and seems to have her life neatly planned out — until her boyfriend of three years suddenly breaks up with her. Naturally, heartbreak does not exactly bring out her most peaceful side, and Shy sets out looking for revenge. But life has other plans when she unexpectedly develops a close friendship with Tara, her ex-boyfriend’s new partner.
That unusual friendship forms the heart of the film and gives Don’t Be Shy a fun twist on the familiar breakup story. Instead of turning the ex’s new partner into a straightforward rival, the film explores how two young women can find an unexpected connection in the middle of an emotionally complicated situation. With romance, friendship, heartbreak and plenty of bad decisions thrown into the mix, the movie appears to be aiming for a coming-of-age story that feels youthful, messy and refreshingly honest.
The film introduces a fresh ensemble featuring Aarushi Bajaj, Ansh Duggal, Bianca Arora and Piyush Khati, while established performers including Neha Dhupia, Anurag Basu and Kunaal Roy Kapur are also part of the cast. Don’t Be Shy is written and directed by Sreeti Mukerji in her directorial debut, giving the project another exciting young voice behind the camera. The film is produced by Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt under Eternal Sunshine Productions.
Don’t Be Shy will begin streaming worldwide on Prime Video on September 25, 2026, in Hindi with English subtitles. With its young cast, romantic-comedy setup and focus on the highs and lows of growing up, the film could strike a familiar chord with anyone who has ever survived a first heartbreak or made a decision they immediately regretted. As Alia’s trailer announcement suggests, growing up can be complicated — but at least it makes for some pretty entertaining stories.
