Veteran actor Govinda paid a heartfelt tribute to late film producer and former CBFC chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani at Mumbai’s Santacruz Hindu Crematorium on June 4, 2026. Nihalani, who passed away at the age of 76 due to liver cirrhosis, was remembered by colleagues, friends, and members of the film fraternity for his immense contribution to Hindi cinema and his ability to nurture fresh talent.
Speaking to reporters at the crematorium, an emotional Govinda reflected on the profound impact Nihalani had on countless artists. He said, "The highly respected Pahlaj Nihalani ji was a foundation stone for many of us. Several artists, including me, who rose from difficult and financially challenging circumstances, received his support and encouragement.”
“There must be at least a dozen artists in the country whose careers were shaped by his guidance. Pahlaj ji had a rare ability to identify talent and help people rise from the ground to great heights. It was a gift bestowed upon him by God. On behalf of the entire Sindhi community, I offer my respects to him and pray that his soul rests in peace" added Govinda.
Govinda’s tribute carried special significance, as Nihalani played a crucial role in launching the actor’s career with the 1986 film Ilzaam. The filmmaker was widely regarded as someone who believed in newcomers and gave opportunities to talented individuals regardless of their background, a quality that earned him lasting respect across the industry.
Beyond producing successful films such as Aankhen, Nihalani also served as the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) from 2015 to 2017. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from several industry figures, including actor-director Farhan Akhtar, with many remembering him as a visionary producer, mentor, and influential figure in Indian cinema.
