The trailer of Dhurandhar is like a grenade that has gone off online: loud, chaotic, all attention-grabbing, and leaving people scrambling to make sense of what they have just seen. Being touted as India's answer to ultra-violent global franchises, the trailer makes one thing amply clear: Aditya Dhar is not playing safe. But whether that trailer is bold filmmaking or reckless sensationalism. well, that's where the debate begins.

On a purely surface level, Dhurandhar is designed to deliver "mass masala on steroids." The visuals are glossy, the performances amped up, and the world is larger-than-life in a consciously exaggerated, almost comic-book way. If the intention is to create some sort of high-octane fever dream stuffed with brutal action, gory showdowns, and adrenaline-loaded set pieces, the trailer certainly delivers on that. Ranveer Singh-feral, unpredictable, almost unrecognizable-commits fully to the madness. His co-stars-Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan-bring their own brand of menace and gravitas, making sure no frame feels calm for longer than two seconds.

But once the initial thrill wears off, the cracks start to show. From a creative standpoint, the trailer relies heavily on familiar tropes-especially when it comes to espionage conspiracies, cross-border tensions, operatives with personal vendettas, shadowy agencies, and patriotic messaging dialed up so far that it becomes meaningless. The music pounds, the explosions roar, the characters shout-but the storytelling purpose behind it all feels frustratingly thin. There is intensity, yes. There is scale, absolutely. But there’s little emotional depth or narrative clarity revealed so far, and that makes the trailer feel more like spectacle for spectacle’s sake than a carefully crafted tease of a complex story.

The most contentious aspect, however, is the violence. Dhurandhar doesn’t just show brutality; it revels in it. The gore is stylized to the point that some viewers will call it thrilling, but others will find it gratuitous and deeply uncomfortable. Violence in cinema isn’t a problem by itself-after all, action films thrive on it. But violence without context, without emotional weight, without narrative justification risks crossing into something more exploitative than impactful. And that’s where Dhurandhar raises legitimate concerns. India’s younger audiences are among the most active consumers of digital content, and when brutality is framed as entertainment without commentary, it invites questions about where creative liberty ends and responsible storytelling begins.

Meanwhile, the outrage surrounding the trailer deserves context too: It's just a trailer. And it does not represent the complete arc or moral grounding of the full film. Artistic expression often pushes boundaries, sometimes more aggressively than audiences expect. A trailer's job is to provoke, to catch your attention, and clearly, Dhurandhar has succeeded at that. The real test will be whether the film itself contextualizes its violence, interrogates its themes, and gives its characters dimension beyond shock value. If it does, then the extremeness may serve a purpose. If it doesn’t, then the criticism will feel justified.

To sum it up: Dhurandhar's trailer is bold, slick, unapologetic—and undeniably divisive. It promises style, swagger, and spectacle, but raises real questions about tone, intent, and responsibility. Some will celebrate it for pushing the envelope; others will reject it for going too far. But one thing is for sure-the trailer has started a necessary conversation about what modern Indian cinema can be, and what lines it shouldn't casually cross.

It's upon the film, now, to justify the noise.
