Netflix has released the official trailer for In the Hand of Dante, the latest cinematic work from acclaimed filmmaker Julian Schnabel. The film promises a visually rich, genre-blending experience that connects medieval Italy with modern-day New York in a story driven by obsession, art, and the search for meaning across centuries.

At the heart of the narrative is a dual performance by Oscar Isaac, who plays both Nick Tosches, a troubled 21st-century writer, and the legendary poet Dante Alighieri in the 14th century. The film explores two parallel journeys—one rooted in literary obsession and crime in modern America, and the other in artistic creation during the Renaissance era.

In the present day storyline, Nick Tosches is pulled out of self-imposed exile after the death of his daughter. He is recruited by a powerful mafia don, played by John Malkovich, to authenticate and possibly steal a rare manuscript believed to be Dante’s The Divine Comedy, written in the poet’s own hand. What begins as an academic pursuit quickly spirals into a violent, dangerous mission.

Assisting Nick on this dark journey is an unpredictable assassin named Louie, played by Gerard Butler, whose brutal methods add a chaotic edge to the unfolding story. The film’s modern timeline is packed with tension, betrayal, and philosophical undertones as Nick is forced to confront grief, morality, and his own obsession with legacy.

Running parallel is the 14th-century storyline of Dante Alighieri himself, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, as he struggles to find inspiration for his greatest literary work. The film gradually reveals how both men—separated by centuries—are connected through themes of love, beauty, suffering, and the divine pursuit of meaning through art.

The ensemble cast also includes major names such as Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese, and John Malkovich, making the project one of the most star-studded releases of the year. The trailer highlights its surreal tone, blending historical grandeur with modern crime thriller elements.

Directed and co-written by Julian Schnabel along with Louise Kugelberg, In the Hand of Dante is based on the novel by Nick Tosches. The film explores how art, obsession, and violence often intertwine when humanity searches for something greater than itself.

Set for release on 24 June 2026, the film is already generating strong curiosity for its ambitious storytelling style and its unusual blend of literary history and noir-inspired thriller elements. If the trailer is any indication, In the Hand of Dante aims to be a visually immersive and intellectually charged cinematic experience.
