Netflix has unveiled the trailer for its highly anticipated series, The Queen of Villains, a dramatic retelling of the rise of a Japanese pro-wrestling icon. The show stars Yuriyan Retriever, Erika Karata, Ayame Goriki, Nobuko Sendo, Takuma Otoo, Daisuke Kuroda, Takumi Saitoh, and Jun Murakami, each bringing their unique flair to this gripping narrative. The central character, Kaoru Matsumoto, portrayed by Retriever, embarks on a relentless quest to achieve her dream of becoming a professional wrestler. However, her journey is fraught with challenges as she faces oppression from her employers and her father, leading her to a crisis of identity and belonging.
As Kaoru's frustrations and anguish mount, she transforms into a formidable villain, channeling her rage into a wrestling persona feared and despised across Japan. This dramatic shift sets the stage for the legendary Hair vs. Hair Death Match, featuring a historic showdown between the beloved Chigusa Nagayo and the notorious Dump Matsumoto—a clash that remains a significant moment in pro-wrestling history.
Originally known as Gokuaku Joou in Japanese, The Queen of Villains is developed, produced, and written by filmmaker Osamu Suzuki, with Junya Ikegami contributing to the script. The series is helmed by supervising director Kazuya Shiraishi, alongside directors Kazuya Shiraishi and Katsuhito Mogi, who bring their directorial vision to each episode.
The series is set to start streaming on Netflix from September 19, 2024.
