Acclaimed filmmaker Mari Selvaraj has lit the first spark for his much-anticipated film Bison: Kaalamaadan with the release of its first single, “Theekkoluthi.” Dropped with a poetic flourish on social media, the caption read: “Let my blazing ocean's thirst be quenched by the single teardrop that steals away from your eyes!”
The metaphor-rich line hints at the emotional depth and intensity we can expect from the film.
The track, composed by Nivas K. Prasanna, marks his first collaboration with Mari Selvaraj since Maamannan (2023), and early reactions suggest it’s a powerful blend of evocative lyrics and stirring melody — hallmarks of the director’s socially-charged storytelling. Selvaraj, known for Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan, once again appears to be weaving emotional resonance into politically conscious cinema.
Starring Dhruv Vikram and Anupama Parameswaran in lead roles, Bison: Kaalamaadan is a sports drama set against a culturally rich backdrop. Judging by the tone of the song and the bilingual posters released (in both Tamil and English), the narrative may explore themes of sacrifice, longing, and societal upheaval — all familiar terrain for Selvaraj, who never shies away from hard-hitting topics.
The production, backed by Applause Entertainment and Neelam Studios, wrapped filming in February 2025 and is scheduled for a grand release on October 17, 2025, aligning with Diwali. The film boasts a powerful ensemble including Lal, Pasupathy, Rajisha Vijayan, Hari Krishnan, Azhagam Perumal, and Kalaiyarasan.
Unlike Selvaraj’s previous indie-rooted works, Bison is shaping up to be a high-budget, wide-release feature, indicating a conscious move to bring rooted Tamil storytelling to a broader international audience. This scaling-up doesn't appear to compromise on his core strength — storytelling with social substance and cultural depth.
With Theekkoluthi setting the emotional tone and Diwali promising a fiery cinematic release, Bison: Kaalamaadan might just be the perfect collision of art and mainstream appeal that Tamil cinema needs.
