Move over, predictable rom-coms—The Love That Remains is here to remind us that breakups can be funny, heartbreaking, and beautifully scenic all at once. Hlynur Pálmason, the Icelandic auteur behind Godland and A White, White Day, takes a deep dive into the intimate chaos of a family navigating the slow unraveling of a marriage. Set against Iceland’s jaw-dropping landscapes, the film follows artist Anna (Saga Garðarsdóttir) and fisherman Magnús (Sverrir Guðnason) as they try to make sense of lingering love, fading romance, and yes—a charismatic sheepdog named Panda who steals the show at every opportunity.

The film’s genius lies in its ability to balance humor and heartbreak. Pálmason doesn’t rely on cliché arguments or dramatic confrontations; instead, we get quiet, relatable moments—like Anna and Magnús cooking dinner in tense silence, their kids making mischief, or Panda casually photobombing the family drama. The humor is sly, organic, and sometimes so subtle that it sneaks up on you mid-scene, leaving you smiling through tears.

Performances are understated but magnetic. Garðarsdóttir and Guðnason bring a tender, lived-in realism to their roles, portraying a love that’s messy, complicated, and uncomfortably relatable. The kids add both chaos and charm, while Panda? Well, the dog is basically the film’s secret weapon, making the story irresistibly watchable. Cinematography is another standout, with Iceland’s seasons acting almost as an additional character—snowy tension, blossoming hope, and the quiet melancholy of autumn all captured in breathtaking frames.

Sure, the film moves at its own leisurely pace, giving audiences time to soak in the emotions, but that’s part of its charm. It’s not just a story of a breakup—it’s a meditation on memory, devotion, and the invisible threads that connect people long after love has changed shape. Premiering at Cannes 2025 and now set for a US release on January 30, 2026, The Love That Remains promises to charm festival-goers and mainstream audiences alike with its unique mix of humor, heart, and Icelandic magic.
