Netflix has released the main official trailer for Frankenstein, the much-anticipated new film by visionary director Guillermo del Toro, who brings a uniquely gothic and emotionally intense interpretation to Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 novel. After premiering at the 2025 Venice and Telluride Film Festivals, the movie is set for a theatrical release on October 17, 2025, before streaming on Netflix starting November 7.

Oscars winner Guillermo del Toro not only directs but also wrote the screenplay for this dark tale that explores the tragic consequences of scientific ambition. Set in 19th-century Eastern Europe, the story follows brilliant but egotistical scientist Victor Frankenstein, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, who reanimates a creature from a battlefield mass grave. The creature, played by Jacob Elordi, is given a profound voice in this adaptation, shedding the traditional “monster” stereotype to emerge as a complex being of both fury and longing. The trailer’s haunting voiceover from Elordi’s character declares, "If you are not to award me love, then I will indulge in rage," hinting at the deep emotional core of the film.

The movie also stars Mia Goth as Elizabeth, Christoph Waltz as Dr. Pretorious, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Charles Dance, Christian Convery, and Ralph Ineson, rounding out an impressive ensemble. Del Toro’s signature rich visual style and emotional storytelling shine through the trailer’s mix of striking gothic sets, stormy landscapes, and intense character moments. Many critics and fans are praising it as one of the most exciting cinematic releases of the year, blending horror, fantasy, tragedy, and drama with masterful direction.

This rendition of Frankenstein is not just a horror film; it’s an emotional exploration of creation, rejection, and the human need for love and acceptance. Del Toro himself has described the story as more about the human spirit than just the science gone wrong narrative seen in past adaptations. Fans of del Toro’s previous works like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water can expect a deeply layered film that redefines the Frankenstein myth for a modern audience while honoring the timeless source material.

Frankenstein opens in select theaters on October 17, 2025, and will be available for streaming on Netflix starting November 7. For those eager to witness cinematic mastery fused with a classic tale, this film is a must-watch.
