Netflix has officially dropped the trailer for its upcoming 4-part mini-series, Death by Lightning, and it’s every bit as intense, strange, and fascinating as American history gets. Set in the chaotic years following the Civil War, the series tells the gripping and true story of President James Garfield—America’s reluctant 20th president—and his fan-turned-assassin, Charles Guiteau.
At the heart of the series is a chilling relationship between Garfield, played by the always-compelling Michael Shannon, and Guiteau, portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen. Their twisted connection unfolds in the shadows of power, fame, obsession, and delusion. The quote that inspired the title—"Assassination can no more be guarded against than death by lightning"—is from Garfield himself, lending the series an eerie poetic weight right from the start.
Rounding out the powerhouse cast are Betty Gilpin, Nick Offerman, Bradley Whitford, and Shea Whigham, each stepping into roles that reimagine a turbulent period in American political history.
