Searchlight Pictures has unveiled a touching new promo featurette for Rental Family, a deeply human drama directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Hikari. The film stars Oscar winner Brendan Fraser as a lonely American actor adrift in Tokyo, who stumbles into an unconventional job — working for a Japanese “rental family” company, where people can hire stand-ins to fill emotional voids in their lives. What begins as a gig soon becomes a transformative journey of empathy, identity, and rediscovered purpose.

Set against the neon beauty and quiet melancholy of modern Tokyo, Rental Family explores the intersections of performance and authenticity. As Fraser’s character takes on different roles for his clients — a father, a friend, a husband — he begins to experience a sense of belonging he never found in his own life. But as the boundaries between real emotion and acted affection start to blur, he’s forced to confront the meaning of connection in a world built on fleeting interactions.

Joining Fraser is a stellar ensemble cast including Takehiro Hira, Mari Yamamoto, Shannon Gorman, and Akira Emoto, each adding depth to this cross-cultural story of loneliness and love. Hikari, known for 37 Seconds and her emotionally resonant storytelling, co-wrote the screenplay with Stephen Blahut, crafting what promises to be one of 2025’s most heartfelt cinematic experiences.

With its mix of tender humor and quiet introspection, Rental Family looks set to capture the universal longing for belonging. The film hits theaters on November 21, 2025 — just in time for audiences to fall in love with Brendan Fraser all over again.
