Netflix has dropped the official trailer for Below, an upcoming supernatural thriller series that takes audiences into the eerie waters and isolated landscapes of Newfoundland. Headlined by Josh Hartnett, the series combines a mysterious sea creature, a troubled fishing community and long-buried family secrets. With danger emerging from beneath the water, Below looks ready to deliver an atmospheric thriller where the biggest nightmare may be hiding somewhere no one can see.
Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney, a stubborn but big-hearted fisherman living in a small Newfoundland town. Calvin has spent decades carrying the weight of his father’s mysterious death, but his past suddenly becomes impossible to ignore when an unidentified creature begins terrorising the community. As fear spreads through the town, Calvin finds himself forced to confront both the monster outside and the personal demons he has been trying to escape.
The situation becomes even more complicated when Calvin realises that protecting his family means taking matters into his own hands. Determined to keep his son Wade and the rest of his loved ones safe, he joins forces with a visiting marine researcher played by Mackenzie Davis. Together, they begin investigating the strange creature and the secrets surrounding the island, gradually discovering that the terror may be connected to mysteries buried much deeper than anyone expected.
The series boasts an impressive ensemble alongside Hartnett and Davis. Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton, Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn, Rohan Campbell and Willow Kean are also part of the cast. With a remote community at the heart of the story, the show appears to use its close-knit setting to build tension as neighbours are forced to confront something that threatens to tear their world apart.
Below is created and showrun by screenwriter Jesse McKeown, with writing contributions from Perry Chafe, Karen Walton, Natty Zavitz and McKeown. The episodes are directed by Jamie Childs, Stephen Dunn and Helen Shaver. The creative team appears to be leaning into a combination of supernatural horror, family drama and mystery, with the unforgiving Newfoundland setting adding another layer of isolation to the story.
Netflix is set to premiere Below on October 8, 2026. With Josh Hartnett leading a story involving a mysterious creature, a grieving fisherman and secrets hidden beneath the surface, the series could be a compelling addition to the streamer’s supernatural thriller lineup. The trailer leaves one question hanging in the air — or perhaps more accurately, beneath the water: what exactly is lurking below?
