The Jaipur Literature Festival is preparing to celebrate a landmark 20th edition in January 2027, marking two decades of bringing writers, thinkers, artists and readers together in one of the world's most vibrant literary gatherings. Supported by the Government of Rajasthan, the festival has grown from a gathering in Jaipur into a globally recognised platform for literature, culture and ideas, with its 20th edition set to take place from January 14 to 18, 2027 under the theme “20 Years of Ideas. Stories. Conversations.”
Since its inception in 2008, the festival has welcomed more than 8,000 writers, speakers and artists, attracted over 5 million visitors on-ground and reached an estimated 1 billion-plus audiences through digital platforms, broadcast partnerships and media networks. Its influence, however, goes beyond these numbers. Over the years, the festival has helped move literary conversations outside traditional publishing and academic spaces, creating an environment where books and ideas can be discussed by audiences across generations, professions, languages and backgrounds.
From Jaipur to international destinations, the festival has developed a network of more than 15 editions across countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, Australia, the Middle East, Maldives and Ireland. Its wider cultural influence can also be seen in the more than 300 literary gatherings and festivals across India, the region and around the world that have drawn inspiration from its spirit of open literary exchange. The festival has also hosted an extraordinary range of voices, from Nobel Laureates and Booker Prize winners to heads of state, economists, philosophers, artists and global thinkers, making Jaipur a significant meeting point for literary and intellectual conversations.
A major part of the festival's identity has been its commitment to India's linguistic and cultural diversity. Through multilingual programming, translation initiatives and conversations featuring writers from different Indian and international languages, the festival has created opportunities for regional literary traditions to reach wider audiences. As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, the festival's announcement has been released simultaneously across all 22 official languages of India, reinforcing its belief that India's many languages carry stories and perspectives that deserve a place in the larger cultural conversation. Festival Co-Director Namita Gokhale said, “The soul of India lies in her literary heritage and linguistic diversity. It is only appropriate that we celebrate our milestone 20th year with a tribute to her many languages through our Bhasha Swarmala series.”
The festival's journey has also been closely connected with Rajasthan, whose government has supported the event since its inception. The state's cultural heritage and Jaipur's distinctive setting have provided the festival with a home unlike any other, while the event has in turn helped place Rajasthan firmly on the international literary map. Sanjoy K. As the Jaipur Literature Festival enters its third decade, its ambition remains rooted in the same idea that helped shape it — that literature can open doors to wider conversations about society and the world.
