Mumbai witnessed a memorable celebration of live performance as Sunil Grover, Jaideep Ahlawat, Piyush Mishra and several prominent entertainment personalities gathered for the opening of the 12th Khidkiyaan Theatre Festival on October 15, 2026. Hosted by celebrated casting director Mukesh Chhabra, the three-day festival promises to celebrate the power of storytelling, stage performances and the artists who bring characters to life. Presented by Mukesh Chhabra Casting Company in association with T-Series Films, the event brought together familiar faces from cinema and theatre for an evening filled with nostalgia, camaraderie and a shared love for the performing arts.
The inauguration began on an auspicious note, with Sunil Grover, Jaideep Ahlawat and veteran artist Piyush Mishra joining Mukesh Chhabra and his father on stage for the traditional lighting of the diyas. The ceremony set the tone for a festival dedicated to celebrating the magic of theatre and the people behind it. While celebrity appearances added plenty of star power, the gathering also highlighted the close-knit relationships that often develop among artists who share a passion for performing. It was a reminder that behind the glamour of the entertainment industry lies a creative community built on collaboration, mentorship and years of hard work.
One of the most heartwarming moments came when Piyush Mishra looked back on his professional association with Sunil Grover. During a media interaction, Mishra recalled working with Grover in 1999 on the play Life and Times of Galileo. Reflecting on their journey since those early days, he expressed pride in how Grover, Jaideep Ahlawat and Mukesh Chhabra had developed their respective careers. The recollection added a nostalgic touch to the evening, offering a glimpse into the years of dedication and artistic growth that often precede mainstream recognition. For theatre lovers, such stories are a powerful reminder that every celebrated performer has a journey worth remembering.
Jaideep Ahlawat also added to the excitement by taking the stage alongside a live music band, engaging with Mukesh Chhabra and celebrating the unique energy of live performance. Unlike films and television, where scenes can be repeated and refined, theatre demands an immediate connection between performers and audiences. Every expression, pause and line delivery unfolds in real time, making each performance a one-of-a-kind experience. Ahlawat's participation reflected the spirit of the festival, which places live storytelling and the craft of acting at the centre of the celebration.
The opening day also attracted several other well-known names from the entertainment industry. Filmmaker Farah Khan Kunder, director Nitesh Tiwari, actor Pulkit Samrat and actress Simrat Kaur were among the personalities spotted at the event. Their presence highlighted the festival's appeal across different corners of the industry, from filmmaking and casting to acting and stage performance. With artists from diverse creative backgrounds coming together, Khidkiyaan Theatre Festival offered a platform to reconnect with the foundations of performance and celebrate the talent that powers Indian entertainment.
Running from October 15 to October 17, 2026, the 12th Khidkiyaan Theatre Festival is a celebration of the art form that has inspired generations of performers. The opening day's mix of memorable recollections, live music and celebrity camaraderie captured the essence of theatre: honest storytelling, human connection and the thrill of being present in the moment. With Mukesh Chhabra and his team bringing together established names and creative talent, the festival promises to keep the spirit of the stage alive in Mumbai. After all, long before the cameras roll, it is often the theatre that teaches an actor how to truly own the spotlight.
