Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga has strongly reacted to the criticism surrounding his films following the shocking attack on a Class 10 student at a school in Raptadu, Andhra Pradesh. The incident, which reportedly involved a 21-year-old man attacking the 15-year-old girl after she rejected his advances, has triggered widespread concern about the safety of students and sparked a heated debate on social media. Amid discussions linking the incident to violent scenes in Vanga's controversial film Animal, the director has criticised those who, according to him, are using a real-life tragedy to target cinema and settle personal scores.

Taking to X, Vanga shared a strongly worded post in which he called for empathy towards the victim and her family instead of turning the incident into an opportunity to attack filmmakers. He wrote, “When someone commits a heinous crime, the first response should be empathy & an attempt to understand the larger problem. Not finding a convenient scapegoat in cinema. It is becoming increasingly clear that your concern is not for the victims or their families, but that you're using a horrific tragedy as a dirty excuse to settle your personal scores. This is especially directed at those failed frustrated jobless male/female actors, few directors, producers & parasites, who suddenly appoint themselves as social reformers whenever an opportunity arises to take a dig at someone else's work. A tragedy deserves empathy, not opportunism. Learn the difference.”

The filmmaker's reaction comes after the November 1 incident at Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu, in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district. According to the details provided in reports, the accused, identified as Hemanth, allegedly attacked the schoolgirl, Gopika, after she rejected his advances. The incident has raised serious questions about the safety of children in educational institutions and the need to address harassment and violence against young women. The case has also prompted conversations about how schools and communities can better protect students from such threats.

However, the incident soon became part of a wider debate about the influence of violent portrayals in films. Some social media users drew comparisons between the attack and a scene from Vanga's 2023 film Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor. In the sequence being discussed, Kapoor's character enters his sister's college classroom carrying a loaded gun to confront those he believes have bullied her. The scene was among the film's widely discussed moments, and its resurfacing has brought renewed attention to the director's treatment of violence on screen.

The criticism has also extended beyond Animal, with conversations emerging about the responsibility of filmmakers when depicting aggression, revenge and violent behaviour. Vanga, however, has pushed back against attempts to connect his cinematic work to the real-life attack. His post argues that the immediate priority should be supporting the victim and understanding the social issues that allow such incidents to occur, rather than looking for an easy explanation or assigning blame to a film.

The debate highlights a difficult question about cinema's social influence and the responsibility that comes with depicting violence. Films can invite discussion about their themes, messages and impact, and audiences are entitled to question creative choices. At the same time, a real-life crime requires careful attention to the victim, the alleged perpetrator's actions and the circumstances surrounding the incident. A direct link between a fictional scene and an actual act of violence should not be assumed without evidence. As the discussion continues, Vanga's sharp response has added another layer to an already heated conversation, while the safety and well-being of the young student must remain at its centre.
