Universal Pictures has unveiled a new behind-the-scenes featurette for The Odyssey, offering audiences an exciting glimpse into Christopher Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of one of the most influential stories ever told. Set to arrive in theaters on July 17, 2026, the film reimagines Homer’s legendary epic poem as a grand mythological action thriller, with Nolan once again pushing cinematic boundaries on an unprecedented scale.
The featurette highlights one of the film's biggest achievements: The Odyssey has been shot entirely using IMAX film cameras, marking a first for a feature film of this magnitude. Filmed across multiple locations around the world, the production aims to immerse audiences in the vast and dangerous journey of Odysseus, the legendary King of Ithaca. The filmmaker's commitment to practical filmmaking and large-format cinematography appears set to bring the ancient tale to life with breathtaking scope and visual grandeur.
Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, embarking on a perilous voyage home following the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters some of Greek mythology's most iconic figures and creatures, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the enchanting Sirens, and the powerful witch-goddess Circe. The story ultimately builds toward his long-awaited reunion with his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, after years of struggle and survival.
The ensemble cast is stacked with some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Tom Holland as Telemachus, Charlize Theron as Circe, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Mia Goth, Cosmo Jarvis, and Corey Hawkins. The scale of the cast reflects the epic nature of the source material and Nolan's vision for a sweeping cinematic event.
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey is adapted from Homer's timeless epic and features cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema and a score by Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson. With its groundbreaking IMAX production, mythological spectacle, and star-studded cast, The Odyssey is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of 2026 when it sails into theaters on July 17.
