MGM+ has released the full official trailer for its upcoming crime drama series The Westies, a hard-hitting mob story set in 1980s New York City. The series dives deep into the violent underworld of the Irish mafia, known as “The Westies,” who once controlled parts of Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen while clashing with the Italian mafia.

Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing New York, The Westies explores the power struggle between rival criminal factions during the construction of the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The project becomes a major source of tension and profit, triggering a dangerous battle for control in the city’s criminal ecosystem.

At the center of the story is Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons, who plays mafioso Eamon Sweeney, the powerful and calculating figure leading the Westies. Despite being vastly outnumbered by the Italian Five Families, the Irish gang’s brutal reputation allows them to carve out a fragile but profitable space in the city’s underworld.

The series also features a strong ensemble cast including Titus Welliver, Jessica Frances Dukes, Tom Brittney, Stanley Morgan, Sarah Bolger, Allen Leech, Hamish Allan-Headley, Vincent Walsh, and Hilary McCormack. Each character adds depth to the layered storytelling that blends crime, politics, and survival in a volatile era.

According to the official synopsis, The Westies is a “gritty, kinetic crime drama” that follows the rise and internal collapse of the infamous Irish gang. While their brutality earns them respect in the criminal hierarchy, internal divisions between the younger generation and old-school leadership threaten to destroy their fragile empire from within.

The growing tensions also attract increased attention from the FBI, which begins tightening its investigation into organized crime activities involving both the Irish and Italian mafia networks. This escalating pressure adds another layer of danger to an already explosive situation.

The series is co-created and co-written by acclaimed TV writer Chris Brancato and Michael Panes, with episodes directed by Alan Taylor, known for his work in high-profile television dramas. The storytelling promises a cinematic blend of historical realism and intense character-driven drama. Scheduled for release on July 12, 2026.
