Angelina Jolie is returning to the director's chair with Without Blood, an intimate drama that explores the lasting scars of war, grief and revenge. Brainstorm Media has unveiled the official US trailer for the film, giving audiences a closer look at Jolie's adaptation of Alessandro Baricco's acclaimed novel of the same name.

Set against the backdrop of an unnamed country in the early 20th century, Without Blood begins with a devastating act of violence. Gunmen arrive at a remote farmhouse seeking revenge, where a doctor is desperately trying to protect his young son and daughter. The encounter quickly turns deadly, setting the emotional foundation for a story that continues long after the violence itself has ended.

The film stars Salma Hayek Pinault as Nina, a woman whose childhood was shattered by the death of her family during the war. Years later, she tracks down a man she believes is connected to what happened. Her search eventually leads her to Tito, played by Demián Bichir, a lottery seller whose seemingly ordinary life is interrupted by an encounter he immediately recognises as anything but accidental.

The trailer hints that Without Blood will not be a conventional revenge thriller. Instead, Jolie appears to be interested in what happens after revenge becomes possible. Nina has spent years carrying the weight of what happened to her family, while Tito is forced to confront the consequences of his own past. Their meeting becomes a tense psychological exchange where memories, guilt and unanswered questions gradually come to the surface.

Hayek Pinault and Bichir appear to be at the heart of the film, with their performances built around long conversations and quiet confrontations rather than constant action. The central question is not simply whether Nina will get revenge, but whether revenge can actually provide the closure she has been searching for.

The film's intimate approach is particularly striking considering the scale of its subject. Rather than portraying war primarily through battlefields and explosions, Jolie focuses on the emotional aftermath. The story explores how violence can remain embedded in people's lives long after the weapons have fallen silent, shaping their relationships, memories and understanding of justice.

Jolie has adapted the screenplay from Alessandro Baricco's novel, retaining what has been described as the book's parable-like quality. The filmmaker appears to use the spare setting and concentrated narrative to examine much larger questions about humanity, violence and forgiveness. The film was shot at Rome's legendary Cinecittà Studios, giving the production a cinematic backdrop that complements its period setting. The frontier landscapes and isolated locations help create a world that feels deliberately removed from a specific country or historical conflict, allowing the story to function as a broader meditation on war and its consequences.

Alongside Hayek Pinault and Bichir, the cast includes Juan Minujín. The film's compact ensemble allows the story to remain focused on its central emotional conflict, with the relationship between Nina and Tito forming the dramatic core.

For Jolie, Without Blood represents another chapter in her filmmaking career, following projects including First They Killed My Father and the historical drama In the Land of Blood and Honey. Her latest film once again puts human consequences at the centre of a story shaped by conflict. The trailer's greatest strength is perhaps its restraint. There is no rush to explain everything, and the mystery surrounding Nina's encounter with Tito is allowed to develop gradually. That measured approach could make the film especially compelling for audiences looking for a thoughtful drama rather than a straightforward revenge story.

Without Blood is scheduled to arrive in the United States on September 18, 2026. With Angelina Jolie directing, Salma Hayek Pinault and Demián Bichir leading the cast, and Alessandro Baricco's novel providing the source material, the film looks set to be a quietly intense exploration of what war leaves behind — and whether forgiveness can ever truly erase its shadow.
