After sparking national debate with The Kashmir Files, director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is back—this time turning the lens eastward with The Bengal Files. The highly anticipated trailer is set to release tomorrow, August 16, 2025, at 12 noon, building anticipation for the film’s theatrical release on September 5.
Backed by producers Abhishek Agarwal, Pallavi Joshi, and Agnihotri himself, and presented by Tej Narayan Agarwal and I Am Buddha in association with Zee Studios, The Bengal Files dives into the explosive events of 1946 Bengal: the Noakhali riots and Direct Action Day. These incidents, marked by mass killings and displacements, have often been footnoted in history textbooks—but Agnihotri is aiming to change that.
Leaning on historical records, including a 1947 British report reviewed in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, the film explores how over 5,000 lives were lost and 50,000 people displaced—highlighting not just communal tensions but alleged political manipulation from Delhi that may have fueled the fire. Like his previous work, Agnihotri seems unafraid to challenge dominant historical narratives, even if that means walking a tightrope between revelation and dramatization.
While The Kashmir Files became a surprise global hit, grossing $30 million despite polarizing reviews, Agnihotri's follow-up The Vaccine War didn’t quite land with audiences. Now, all eyes are on The Bengal Files—will it ignite fresh dialogue or stir fresh controversy?
