Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for By Any Means, an intense crime thriller inspired by true events that promises to deliver a gripping mix of history, suspense, and action. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Elegance Bratton, the film takes audiences back to 1960s Mississippi, where a dangerous investigation into the murders of civil rights leaders forces two unlikely men to work together.
The newly released trailer wastes no time establishing its high-stakes premise. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil Rights Movement, By Any Means follows a young Black FBI agent, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is tasked with investigating a series of brutal killings targeting civil rights activists. As the case grows more complex and the justice system struggles to deliver answers, he is forced into an uneasy alliance with one of the last people anyone would expect to help.
That man is Greg Scarpa, a notorious mafia hitman portrayed by Mark Wahlberg. Despite coming from completely different worlds, the pair find themselves united by a common goal: tracking down those responsible for the murders. As the investigation deepens, the line between justice and vengeance begins to disappear, creating a tense and morally complicated partnership at the center of the story.
The film's official tagline perfectly captures its gritty tone: "When the system is broken, two men divided by everything agree on one thing: the law has limits. They don't." The trailer leans heavily into that conflict, showcasing violent confrontations, tense interrogations, and a growing sense of urgency as the two men pursue answers through increasingly dangerous means.
Beyond its compelling lead duo, By Any Means features a strong supporting cast that includes Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, LisaGay Hamilton, LaChanze, Ethan Embry, David Strathairn, and Giancarlo Esposito. The ensemble adds significant star power to a project already drawing attention for its historical subject matter and intriguing premise.
The film is directed by Elegance Bratton, whose previous work earned praise for its powerful storytelling and nuanced exploration of identity and social issues. The screenplay comes from Sascha Penn, who adapts the remarkable true story into what appears to be a tense crime thriller with political and emotional depth.
By Any Means arrives in theaters on September 4, 2026.
