Some characters are remembered for centuries, some are debated across generations, and then there are those who deserve to be understood beyond the stories we have always heard. Lara Dutta is ready to explore exactly that with her portrayal of Mata Kaikeyi in Namit Malhotra's ambitious cinematic adaptation of Ramayana. The actress recently shared an emotional and deeply personal note on social media, describing the role as the fulfilment of a long-held wish and an extraordinary privilege. And judging by her words, this is clearly a character she has embraced with her heart.

Lara took to Twitter to reflect on what it means to become part of a story that has lived through generations. Calling it something greater than oneself and something that transcends time, she spoke about the responsibility of portraying a woman who has often been misunderstood in popular interpretations of the epic. For Lara, Kaikeyi is not simply a character defined by a few decisions that changed the course of the Ramayana. She is a woman with emotions, conflicts, vulnerabilities and regrets, and the actress hopes to bring those layers to the screen.

In her heartfelt post, Lara wrote, “What an extraordinary privilege to portray a mother who has perhaps been one of the most misunderstood women in history. To be entrusted with the responsibility of bringing alive her humanity… her angst, her vulnerabilities, her guilt and her remorse.” She also expressed her hope that audiences would look beyond centuries-old perceptions and recognise Kaikeyi's pivotal role in the unfolding of the divine prophecy. The actress described the experience as humbling and said she hopes to do justice to Mata Kaikeyi. Her message ended with the powerful words, “Jai Shree Ram.”

The actress also shared her gratitude towards producer Namit Malhotra and director Nitesh Tiwari for trusting her with such a significant character. She extended her love and respect to the entire cast and crew, acknowledging the privilege of being part of a project of this scale. However, amid all the excitement, Lara's note took a particularly emotional turn when she mentioned her late father. “I miss my father tremendously today and wish he was here with me to see this,” she wrote. It was a touching reminder that professional milestones can also bring deeply personal emotions to the surface, especially when there is someone special we wish could share the moment.

The promotional pictures shared alongside her message offer a glimpse of Lara's transformation into the royal world of the epic. Dressed in elaborate traditional attire and striking jewellery, the actress appears in regal looks that reflect Kaikeyi's place in the royal household. The visuals have added to the curiosity surrounding her character, particularly because the film aims to present the familiar epic on a grand cinematic canvas. For Lara, however, the real challenge appears to be going beyond the grandeur and finding the human emotions behind the queen.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, Ramayana: Part 1 features an impressive ensemble cast led by Ranbir Kapoor, with Yash, Sai Pallavi, Sunny Deol, Ravi Dubey, Anupam Kher, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi, Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil, Indira Krishnan and Lara Dutta among the cast. Based on Valmiki's epic, the film is the first instalment of a planned two-part cinematic adaptation. It premiered at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on October 27, 2026, before its worldwide theatrical release on November 5.

With Ramayana: Part 1 now in cinemas, Lara's portrayal of Kaikeyi is set to invite conversations about one of the epic's most debated characters. Rather than approaching her only through the lens of blame, the actress hopes to explore the emotions and circumstances that shaped her choices. It is a fascinating opportunity for an actor and a fresh perspective for audiences familiar with the story. After all, some characters don't need to be rewritten; they simply need to be understood from another point of view.
