Kino Lorber has unveiled the official trailer for Atonement, an emotional Iraq War drama that looks beyond the battlefield to examine the scars left behind long after the shooting stops. Starring Boyd Holbrook, Kenneth Branagh and Hiam Abbass, the film follows a troubled former Marine struggling to confront a devastating decision he made during the early days of the Iraq War. Rather than presenting war as a straightforward tale of heroes and villains, Atonement digs into the deeply personal consequences that can linger for decades.
Set against the chaos of Baghdad in 2003, the story centres on the Khachaturian family, who are displaced from their home following US military action and seek safety with relatives. Three generations find themselves living together under one roof, attempting to create some sense of normality while the conflict rages around them. When another bombing occurs nearby, the family makes the difficult decision to return home, setting in motion the chain of events that will permanently alter their lives.
Their journey through the war-torn streets takes a horrific turn when the family becomes caught in a firefight between US Marines and insurgents. In the confusion and fear of the moment, one Marine makes a split-second decision that devastates the Khachaturian family. The trailer appears to capture the emotional weight of that incident without turning the tragedy into spectacle, instead focusing on the human beings left to live with its consequences.
Years later, the Marine remains haunted by what happened in Iraq. His search for answers eventually becomes a search for forgiveness, as he is aided by a New Yorker journalist in attempting to reconnect with the survivors. At the centre of that difficult journey is the Khachaturian matriarch, forcing him to confront not only the family he hurt but also the version of himself he has carried since the war. The film promises moving performances from its cast, with Hiam Abbass bringing the perspective of a mother and survivor whose life has been permanently shaped by violence.
