The Flamingo With the Fiercest Stare: Why Everyone’s Talking About This Chilean Gem

There’s a certain kind of film that doesn’t just enter festivals—it struts into them, feathers out, eyeliner sharp, daring people not to look. The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo is exactly that film. Imagine a queer western, a fever dream, a coming-of-age tale, and a political ghost story tossed into the same sparkly blender. Now imagine it actually works. That’s what makes Diego Céspedes’ breakout feature so delightfully impossible to summarize without waving your hands dramatically.

Set in a remote Chilean mining town in 1982, the film follows 11-year-old Lidia—played with wide-eyed brilliance by Tamara Cortés—who is being raised by a vibrant queer community that could outshine any desert sun. Instead of growing up in a world of hush-hush conversations and whispered shame, Lidia’s surrounded by drag performers, trans women, and the kind of auntie energy that could lift a small car. And yet, even in this sanctuary, a myth begins to creep in: an unknown illness spreading through a man’s gaze. Suddenly, everyone’s eyes feel a little too powerful.

What makes the movie so fascinating—aside from its gorgeous, sun-baked surrealism—is the way Céspedes uses childhood curiosity to slice right through adult paranoia. Where grown-ups jump to fear, Lidia jumps to questions. Where the town sees danger, she sees the chance to uncover truth. And honestly, if I had been that brave at eleven, I’d probably be ruling a country or at least able to assemble IKEA furniture without crying.

It helps, of course, that the film comes wrapped in festival glitter. Cannes loved it so much it handed it the top Un Certain Regard prize, and other fests have basically turned it into the indie-film equivalent of a prom queen—except a prom queen who can also recite queer history and has impeccable taste in desert lighting. Critics have been calling it “deeply affecting,” “poetic,” and “a piece of proudly, vitally queer art.” And for once, everyone seems to agree.

Whether you’re into queer cinema, magical realism, coming-of-age stories, or simply movies that dare to be weird in the most wonderful way, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo is shaping up to be a must-watch. It’s bold, it’s tender, it’s mythic, and it has something to say—sometimes softly, sometimes with flamenco-level flair. And honestly? The flamingo doesn’t just gaze. It stares straight into your heart, and you’ll love every second of it.
