Actress Saumya Tandon has unveiled a groundbreaking short film, “Vispala,” reimagining the story of India’s first warrior queen, told through the lens of AI-assisted filmmaking. The eight-minute film, released on Tandon’s YouTube channel, brings together a team of six storytellers across five countries to explore resilience, love, and human sacrifice in ancient Indian mythology.

In a heartfelt note accompanying the teaser, Tandon shared the journey behind the project: “This is a special film for me… We had our story. An unsung heroine who deserved her place in light. Yes, we imagined her love story. Yes, we interpreted what history left in fragments.” The story draws inspiration from hymns in the Rig Veda, which mention Vispala as a woman who lost her leg in battle and returned with an iron limb—a testament to courage and perseverance.

The film was created entirely using AI tools such as Google Veo 3.1, Flow, Gemini, ElevenLabs, and Suno, and was originally developed for Google’s 1 Billion Followers Summit AI competition in November 2025. The project set out to test whether AI could sustain a continuous narrative with recurring characters, evolving emotional arcs, and shifting landscapes, rather than merely generating flashy visuals.

The international team behind “Vispala” included director Ishan Modi, scriptwriter Loveena Tandon, AI video generator Nick McCarthy, AI image and music specialist Aishia Datta, and editors Rohan Palla and Matthew Berger. Tandon stars in the film alongside Viraf Patel, who lent both his voice and digital avatar to portray the story’s hero.

Tandon emphasized the collaborative nature of the project, writing: “Six people. Five countries. Multiple time zones. Some of us have never met in person. This film is not about showing off technology. It is about how art ignores borders, and the power of AI where collaboration refuses to be limited by distance.”

Through “Vispala,” Tandon and her global team aim to revive one of the oldest recorded stories of courage in Indian mythology, giving a voice to a figure almost erased by time while highlighting the creative possibilities of AI-powered storytelling.
