A fresh and fiercely contemporary vision of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy has arrived, as Vertical debuts the official US trailer for a daring new take on Hamlet. This South Asian London-set reinvention keeps the Bard’s original words intact but shifts the cultural ground beneath them — and that change transforms everything. Identity, intergenerational conflict, faith, family duty, and belonging now pulse at the heart of this gripping adaptation.

Directed by Aneil Karia and written by Michael Lesslie, the film reimagines Hamlet within the world of a British South Asian family in modern-day London. While Shakespeare’s dialogue remains, the setting reframes the emotional and political stakes, exploring how legacy and power operate within diasporic communities navigating tradition and ambition.

Leading the cast is Riz Ahmed as a brooding, volatile Hamlet. The story follows his return to London for his father’s funeral, only to be blindsided when his uncle Claudius swiftly marries his newly widowed mother. When the ghost of his father reveals a dark betrayal, Hamlet spirals into fury and vengeance, grappling not only with revenge but with his own fractured sense of identity and sanity.

The ensemble cast adds remarkable weight to the drama. Morfydd Clark, Joe Alwyn, Timothy Spall, Art Malik, Sheeba Chaddha, and Avijit Dutt round out a cast that bridges generations and cultures — mirroring the story’s thematic tensions.

What makes this adaptation especially electrifying is its cultural specificity. By embedding Hamlet’s existential crisis within the framework of a South Asian family business and community expectations, the film intensifies the play’s enduring questions: What do we owe our parents? How far does loyalty stretch? And who are we when tradition collides with personal truth?

Slated for an April 10, 2026 release, this reimagined Hamlet promises to be more than a retelling — it’s a reclamation. With Riz Ahmed at the center of its storm, Shakespeare’s tragedy feels newly urgent, speaking directly to a generation wrestling with heritage, power, and the cost of revenge.
