The trailer launch event of Main Vaapas Aaunga in Mumbai turned into a heartfelt celebration of storytelling, cinema, and emotional filmmaking as actor, writer, and director Rajat Kapoor opened up about his experience working with acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali. Kapoor, who plays a pivotal role in the upcoming film, had nothing but admiration for the director’s unique understanding of his characters.
Speaking during the event, Rajat Kapoor shared a fascinating story about how he came on board for the project. “I received a random call from Imtiaz and went to his office. I’ve known Imtiaz for—well, whatever—20 years, but I don’t think we’ve ever exchanged anything more than a ‘Hi, hello.’ So, this was really the first time,” Kapoor recalled.
What surprised the actor most was that Imtiaz Ali did not narrate the entire script to him. Instead, the filmmaker simply walked him through two scenes involving his character — and that alone was enough to convince Kapoor to join the film. “He read out—or rather, he narrated—two scenes to me. Not the full script, nothing like that—just two scenes... which involved my character. And I said, ‘Even if it’s just these two scenes...’ I mean, because they were so well-written,” he said.
Kapoor went on to praise Imtiaz Ali’s emotional investment in the people he creates on screen, calling it one of the filmmaker’s rarest strengths. “What I realized during the shoot is that, perhaps, there is no other director who knows his characters quite as well as he does. Imtiaz is truly, deeply invested in his characters. He knows them inside out,” Kapoor shared, drawing applause from the audience present at the event.
The veteran actor also reflected on how such detailed direction changes the experience for performers. “So, I don’t know if that makes your job as an actor easier or more difficult, but it certainly makes it fun,” he added with a smile. His comments have since resonated strongly online, especially among fans of Imtiaz Ali’s emotionally layered storytelling style seen in films like Rockstar, Tamasha, and Jab We Met.
Set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition, Main Vaapas Aaunga explores themes of love, longing, displacement, nostalgia, and cross-generational emotions. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina, and Naseeruddin Shah in key roles, alongside Rajat Kapoor. The film’s music has been composed by legendary musician A. R. Rahman.
With emotional speeches from the cast and increasing buzz around the trailer, Main Vaapas Aaunga is steadily becoming one of the most anticipated Hindi films of 2026. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 12, 2026.
