Lock your doors — Normal is anything but. Magnolia Pictures has dropped the full official trailer for the upcoming action thriller, and it promises a bullet-riddled showdown in the most deceptively named town in America. Hitting theaters this spring, the film pairs an unassuming lawman with explosive chaos — and the result looks like one of the season’s most entertaining genre rides.
The film marks the latest from acclaimed British director Ben Wheatley, known for his sharp, unpredictable style in films ranging from Kill List to High-Rise and most recently Meg 2: The Trench. With Normal, Wheatley pivots back to lean, muscular action storytelling — this time set in a quiet Midwestern town where peace shatters overnight.
Leading the charge is Bob Odenkirk as Sheriff Ulysses, a weary lawman taking what he hopes will be a calm posting far from his recent troubles. Instead, a botched bank robbery uncovers a dark conspiracy buried deep within the town’s foundations. Before long, bullets are flying, deputies are turning, and Ulysses finds himself targeted from every direction — including, ominously, the Yakuza.
Adding serious genre credibility to the mix is screenwriter Derek Kolstad, the creator of the John Wick franchise and co-writer of Nobody — both modern action staples built around underestimated men pushed too far. Kolstad co-wrote Normal alongside Odenkirk, blending bone-crunching action with sharp character beats and dark humor. If the trailer is any indication, the film leans into that same relentless energy while carving out its own twisted identity.
The ensemble cast only sweetens the deal. Lena Headey, Henry Winkler, Ryan Allen, Billy MacLellan, Brendan Fletcher, Reena Jolly, Peter Shinkoda, and Jess McLeod round out a lineup that promises plenty of colorful personalities colliding under pressure. With crooked cops, small-town secrets, and international crime syndicates entering the fray, the stakes escalate fast.
