There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned New York meltdown to kick off a romantic comedy — and the first trailer for Fantasy Life delivers exactly that. Released by Greenwich Entertainment, the quirky indie romcom marks the feature directorial debut of actor-turned-filmmaker Matthew Shear. After charming audiences on the festival circuit last year, the film is finally heading to theaters, bringing with it awkward longing, complicated love, and a house full of emotional baggage.

Fantasy Life first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2025, where it won the Audience Award — always a promising sign for a crowd-pleaser. It later scooped up a Best Ensemble Cast prize at the San Diego Film Festival, cementing its reputation as one of the more delightful indie discoveries of the year. Now, with its official trailer out, wider audiences are getting a taste of its sharp humor and heartfelt storytelling.

The story centers on Sam Stein (played by Shear), a 30-something paralegal who spirals into a panic attack after losing his job. In a twist that feels both chaotic and oddly poetic, he stumbles into a gig babysitting his psychiatrist’s three granddaughters. Enter Dianne, played by Amanda Peet — an actress with a stalled career and a rocky marriage to a touring rock bassist. Sparks fly, naturally, but not without layers of neurosis and moral complication.

When Dianne’s husband heads overseas on tour, Sam joins the family for the summer on Martha’s Vineyard. What follows is a romantic setup that’s as messy as it is irresistible: Sam pining in close quarters, Dianne caught between duty and desire, three kids running around, four grandparents hovering nearby — including Sam’s psychiatrist. Add in shared struggles with mental health, and the film leans into vulnerability without losing its comedic edge.

The cast also includes Alessandro Nivola, rounding out an ensemble that critics have praised for its chemistry and lived-in performances. The trailer hints at witty banter, seaside longing, and the kind of intimate emotional honesty that feels refreshingly adult. It’s less about sweeping grand gestures and more about stolen glances across a crowded dinner table.

Produced by Amanda Peet alongside a team of indie heavyweights, Fantasy Life arrives in select U.S. theaters on March 27, 2026. If the trailer is anything to go by, Matthew Shear’s directorial debut isn’t just a fantasy — it’s shaping up to be one of spring’s smartest romantic comedies, blending anxiety, attraction, and summer nostalgia into something both tender and very, very funny.
