SS Rajamouli has once again spotlighted Indian cinema on the global stage after announcing that Baahubali: The Eternal War has been selected for the Work in Progress lineup at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026. Sharing a video post, the filmmaker expressed pride in what he described as a rare and significant moment for mainstream Indian cinema.

Rajamouli praised the creative ambition behind the project, emphasizing how animation provides a limitless canvas for storytelling. The announcement highlighted the excitement of the team as they prepare to showcase their vision at one of the world’s most respected animation platforms, further strengthening India’s presence in global animated filmmaking.

He wrote, “I have always believed animation offers a canvas with no boundaries. It is a rare honor for Indian mainstream cinema that Baahubali: The Eternal War has been selected for the Work in Progress lineup at Annecy 2026. @Shobu_ garu, @_Ishan_Shukla and the whole team is elated to showcase the vision on the world’s most prestigious animation stage. Looking forward!”

The project continues the legacy of the blockbuster universe created by Rajamouli, expanding the world of Baahubali into a CGI-animated saga. Directed by Ishan Shukla and produced by Arka Media Works, the film explores a mythological afterlife where Prince Baahubali enters an eternal conflict spanning 14 realms between Devas and Asuras.

The video shared alongside the announcement features striking concept visuals and animation sequences, giving audiences a glimpse into the scale and ambition of the project. Slated for a 2027 release, the film is being developed as a major expansion of the Baahubali universe, blending mythology, fantasy, and cutting-edge animation technology.

Meanwhile, Rajamouli is also actively working on his next live-action spectacle, Varanasi. The film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran in pivotal roles. The story reportedly follows Rudhra, played by Mahesh Babu, as a looming asteroid threat approaches the ancient city of Varanasi, unfolding across multiple timelines and continents.

Varanasi is scheduled for a grand theatrical release on April 7, 2027, coinciding with the festival of Ugadi. The film is also making history as the first Indian and first non-English language production to be shot in the 1.43:1 IMAX format, underlining Rajamouli’s continued push for global-scale storytelling.
