BUFF Studios has unveiled the official UK trailer for Shadows of Beirut, an intimate indie drama that takes audiences into the heart of Lebanon through a deeply personal story of family, grief and reconciliation. Starring Tala Calil, Assaad Bouab and Flavia Bechara, the film follows a young woman returning to Beirut after 25 years away, only to find herself confronting a past she has spent most of her life trying to leave behind.
At the centre of the story is Lana, played by Tala Calil, who travels back to Beirut to visit her dying father. Their relationship is complicated by decades of separation, painful memories and questions that were never answered. What begins as a difficult homecoming soon becomes an emotional journey in which Lana must decide whether she can finally face the man and the memories she has spent years avoiding.
The trailer gives a glimpse of a woman caught between grief and resentment as she navigates the unfamiliar familiarity of her childhood home. Beirut becomes much more than a backdrop to her story. The city's streets, people and energy gradually draw Lana back into a world connected to her past, creating a fascinating contrast between the emotional distance she feels and the enduring pull of the place she once called home.
Shadows of Beirut appears to approach reconciliation without making it look easy. Lana is not simply returning to forgive her father, nor is she immediately ready to forget what happened. Instead, the film seems interested in the uncomfortable space between forgiveness and estrangement, where complicated feelings can exist at the same time. That emotional honesty could become one of the film's strongest qualities.
The story also explores identity and belonging through Lana's relationship with Beirut. After spending 25 years away, returning to the city forces her to reconsider what home actually means. Through the people she encounters and the memories that resurface, she begins reconnecting with a part of herself that has remained tied to Lebanon despite years of distance.
Directed by Tina Gharavi, Shadows of Beirut is shaped as a character-driven drama rather than a conventional homecoming story. Gharavi has co-written the screenplay with Tala Calil, giving the project a creative foundation that closely connects its storytelling and central character. Calil's dual role as lead actor and writer also adds an interesting personal dimension to Lana's journey.
Assaad Bouab and Flavia Bechara round out the principal cast, joining Calil in a story that promises to balance intimate family drama with the larger emotional landscape of Beirut. The city itself is presented as vibrant and resilient, offering Lana something beyond the painful memories that initially brought her back.
The UK trailer suggests that the film will focus on quiet emotional moments rather than simply relying on dramatic revelations. A dying parent, an estranged daughter and a city filled with memories provide the ingredients for a story about what happens when the past refuses to stay in the past. At the same time, the film appears determined to show Beirut through the people and experiences that make the city feel alive.
Shadows of Beirut is scheduled to release on September 25, 2026. With its themes of family, identity, forgiveness and the complicated meaning of home, the film looks set to offer audiences a thoughtful and emotionally grounded drama. Sometimes going home is not about finding the place you remember. It is about discovering what remains after everything has changed.
