“How long before the wait for justice becomes injustice?” With this pointed question, filmmaker Meghna Gulzar has unveiled a new promo for Daayra, offering another intense glimpse into her upcoming crime thriller starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film is set to arrive in cinemas on September 18, with releases in both Hindi and Malayalam.

The new promo immediately places the question of justice at the heart of the story. Daayra brings Kareena and Prithviraj together for the first time, with the actors playing senior police officers who find themselves on opposite sides of the same case. As the investigation unfolds, the film appears to question where the line between justice and vengeance should be drawn.

The film’s conflict is particularly rooted in the tension between the slow-moving legal process and the temptation to seek immediate, extra-legal justice. Following a crime against a young woman, the story raises difficult questions surrounding police encounters, due process and juvenile law, putting law enforcement and public sentiment on different sides of a deeply emotional case.

The trailer carries the label “inspired by true events”, but Daayra is not based on one single high-profile case. Instead, the film reportedly draws from and blends elements of several cases from across India. This approach allows Gulzar to examine the larger questions surrounding justice rather than simply recreate one real-life incident.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran headline the film as two DCPs whose professional responsibilities and personal interpretations of justice begin to collide. Their opposing perspectives form the dramatic core of the thriller, promising a story where there may be no easy answers and where every decision carries consequences.

Daayra also marks the third collaboration between Junglee Pictures and Meghna Gulzar, following the critically acclaimed Talvar and Raazi. Both films established Gulzar as a filmmaker willing to tackle complex, real-world subjects with a strong emphasis on human choices and moral ambiguity.

Produced by Junglee Pictures and Dr Jayantilal Gada of PEN Studios, the film will be distributed by PEN Marudhar. The decision to release Daayra simultaneously in Hindi and Malayalam also gives the film a wider reach, particularly considering Prithviraj’s strong connection with Malayalam cinema.

With its central question about whether waiting for justice can itself become a form of injustice, Daayra looks set to go beyond being a conventional police thriller. As its September 18 theatrical release approaches, the new promo suggests Meghna Gulzar is preparing a film designed to make audiences question not only who is right, but what justice should actually look like when the law seems too slow.
