Indian independent cinema is making a strong mark at the global festival circuit with Selvi, the Tamil-language drama produced by and starring National Film Award-winning actor Anjali Patil, being selected as one of just two Indian films in the prestigious Vision – Asia section of the 31st Busan International Film Festival.
Ahead of the film's world premiere, the festival has unveiled the trailer of Selvi, offering audiences their first extended glimpse into debut filmmaker Sailesh Rathnakumar’s gritty drama. The film’s selection places it among a tightly curated slate of just 11 titles from across Asia, making its presence particularly significant for India’s independent film landscape.
The trailer introduces audiences to Selvi, played by Anjali, a migrant home-care nurse whose days are shaped by the lives of the people she cares for. Through the rhythms of her work and everyday life, the film slowly reveals the many layers of the woman behind the role.
What begins as an intimate portrait of migration, female friendship and the quiet exhaustion of everyday life gradually reveals deeper layers, like an onion slowly being peeled back. As Selvi’s world unfolds, the story takes more unsettling texture, revealing the complexities of her character and the fragile choices that shape her life.
The film brings together a distinguished creative team, with nine-time National Award winner A. Sreekar Prasad on editing, followed by Bargav Sridhar, who co-writes and shoots the film. Acclaimed sound designer Anand Krishnamoorthi shapes the soundscape, with Suren Vikhash composing the music. Vinoth Kishan, Swathy Krishnan, Raja Krishnamoorty, Archana Padmini and Mekha Rajan join Anjali in the principal cast. The trailer offers the first glimpse of a film poised to make its mark on the international festival circuit.

People move across borders in search of work and dignity, while caregivers often become the backbone of families and communities, carrying emotional and physical responsibilities that remain largely unseen. This is a story rooted in our realities, our people and our lived experiences, but the questions it raises about migration, care, labour, dignity and survival belong to the world. To now have the trailer of the film unveiled at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival feels meaningful. Independent cinema thrives on the freedom to ask difficult questions, to look at lives that don't always make it into the mainstream narrative. So as an actor and producer, it feels liberating to see Selvi find this platform.”
Director Sailesh Rathnakumar says, “For a debut filmmaker, having your work recognised on a global stage is a dream, but having the Busan International Film Festival unveil its trailer is an absolute honour. Selvi grew from an observation that Bargav had made during the pandemic, of home-care workers who cross borders and leave their own families behind to care for ours. That observation stayed with us and became the starting point for this story. To see BIFF champion this narrative as one of only two Indian films in the Vision section is especially validating. It underlines how localised, intimate stories can find a universal resonance. We made this film with patience and a deep commitment to authenticity, and we cannot wait to share Selvi’s world with an international audience this October.”
Backed by the best in the industry, the film is edited by A. Sreekar Prasad, a nine-time National Film Award winner, and sound-designed by Anand Krishnamoorthi, a National Award winner for Ponniyin Selvan: Part I.
