Richa Chadha, alongside her husband Ali Fazal, is beyond excited to bring their upcoming film Girls Will Be Girls to audiences worldwide, with its much-anticipated release on Prime Video on December 18. The film has already garnered critical acclaim, having won several awards at various prestigious film festivals, further heightening the anticipation for its global debut.
In this coming-of-age drama, Richa and Ali have taken on the roles of producers, and they are proud to present a story that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable. What sets the film apart is its fresh, new talent. Girls Will Be Girls features a cast of actors making their big screen debut, and Richa reveals that this was a conscious choice to ensure authenticity.
"The script needed the film to be real, and for that, we couldn’t work with actors who were carrying baggage," Richa shared. "We wanted to bring something fresh, and the story demanded it. These actors are first-time performers, but they wanted to act, and they auditioned for it. They followed the process, and that’s how they were selected. Our story needed them, and they gave exactly what we were looking for. There’s no hesitation in working with big actors but our story demanded this."
Set in the 90s, Girls Will Be Girls explores the complexities of teenage relationships, identity, and self-discovery. The film captures a nostalgic era while dealing with timeless themes, making it resonate with viewers from various generations. For Richa, the 90s were a significant time in her own life.
Reflecting on her own 90s experiences, Richa recalled her time in Delhi, where she spent much of her youth. "My childhood was spent in Delhi in parks, walking down Janpath, and just enjoying the carefree days of student life. Those were the best times — so full of memories. And that’s what we’ve tried to capture in this film. The essence of that time is definitely visible in the film."
As Girls Will Be Girls prepares to stream globally on Prime Video from December 18, audiences can look forward to an evocative journey through the 90s, filled with humor, heart, and nostalgia.
