Signature Entertainment has officially dropped the eerie first promo for The Astronaut, a sci-fi thriller set to land in cinemas on September 22, 2025. Written and directed by Jessica Varley, the film promises a haunting, cerebral dive into the unknown—both extraterrestrial and emotional.
Kate Mara stars as Sam Walker, an astronaut who returns to Earth under deeply suspicious circumstances. Rescued from a damaged space capsule adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, Sam’s survival is nothing short of miraculous. But as she’s forced into quarantine under the watch of her adoptive father, General William Harris (played by the ever-commanding Laurence Fishburne), it becomes clear that whatever she brought back from space may be far more dangerous than anyone expected.
Set in a remote, high-security NASA facility deep in the woods, the film gradually peels back layers of tension. Reunited with her husband (Gabriel Luna), Sam seems normal—at first. But as strange phenomena begin to plague the property, paranoia sets in. Is she imagining it? Or is something truly following her—something that didn’t come from this world? In The Astronaut, trust is a luxury, and nothing, not even family, feels safe.
Varley’s direction leans into classic sci-fi paranoia à la Arrival and Under the Skin, but with a modern psychological twist. With a stellar supporting cast that includes Ivana Milicevic and singer-actress Macy Gray, the film blends haunting visuals, emotional depth, and existential dread. The promo teases glimpses of a muted, eerie world full of shadows, surveillance, and slow-building terror—more about what you don’t see than what you do.
With themes of isolation, mistrust, and identity, The Astronaut is shaping up to be a thoughtful and unnerving addition to the genre. One thing’s for sure: this isn’t just a story about space—it’s about what happens when space comes back with you.
