Prime Video has finally dropped the official trailer for its highly anticipated psychological drama Hedda, and it’s as dangerously stylish as you’d hope. Led by the ever-commanding Tessa Thompson, the film is a contemporary reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s iconic play Hedda Gabler, directed and adapted by acclaimed filmmaker Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels).
Slated for release on October 29, 2025, Hedda promises a simmering tale of power, manipulation, and personal destruction set in a world of intellectual elitism and social facades.
Thompson plays Hedda, a newlywed trapped in the velvet prison of upper-class domesticity. The daughter of the late General Gabler, Hedda is equal parts brilliant and bitter — and dangerously bored. Seeking a thrill, she orchestrates an elaborate social power play under the guise of a glamorous party she convinces her husband George (played by Tom Bateman) to host, despite their financial strain.
Among the guests? Eileen Lovborg (portrayed by Nina Hoss), a bold, controversial author — and George’s fiercest academic rival. Also in the mix are Imogen Poots and Nicholas Pinnock, whose characters are yet to be fully revealed but appear to be caught in Hedda’s tightening web of ambition and manipulation.
Written and directed by DaCosta, this adaptation gives the 19th-century classic a bold 21st-century edge — complete with a diverse, powerhouse cast and themes that cut sharply through gender politics, repression, and intellectual elitism. From the trailer, it’s clear we can expect simmering tension, biting dialogue, and an emotionally charged performance from Thompson, who continues to carve a space as one of Hollywood's most versatile and compelling leads.
Hedda premieres October 29, 2025, exclusively on Prime Video — and judging by this gripping first look, it’s already shaping up to be a serious awards season contender.
